15-04 - Surefire X300 Ultra Weapon Mounted Light

SUREFIRE X300 ULTRA WEAPON MOUNTED LIGHT

OFFICER SAFETY ALERT

During a recent training session, a recruit was unable to draw his firearm from the holster.  It was discovered that the recruit had installed the manufacturer-supplied cotter pin on the battery cover of his Surefire X300 Ultra weapon mounted light.  This cotter pin backed out and prevented the recruit from being able to draw his firearm.

The equipment involved was the Department-issued Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm, Safariland 6280 holster, and SureFire X300 Ultra weapon mounted light.

The cotter pin and various other brackets are included in the X300 light kit as issued by Surefire.  The purpose of these accessories is to provide modularity for various weapon systems.

The X300 should be installed on the M&P handgun WITHOUT the cotter pin. The X300 back plate is held in place by the M&P trigger guard when it is installed on the pistol.  In other words, the back plate release cannot be accidentally activated, even if depressed, while it is mounted on the M&P.  Therefore, the cotter pin serves no purpose when the light is used on the M&P pistol.  The purpose of the cotter pin is to secure the back plate door when it is used in other capacities such as a light for a long rifle.

All personnel using a weapon mounted light are strongly encouraged to immediately inspect their Surefire weapon light and remove the above-mentioned cotter pin.  Please feel free to contact the Biscailuz Center Range at (323) 267-2730 if you have any questions regarding your equipment.
