FACILITY SECURITY AND AWARENESS
The purpose of this newsletter is to remind Department personnel to remain aware and vigilant while on duty at county or contracted facilities.
Department bureaus are housed in a variety of facility types, including secure/unsecure county-owned buildings and rented offices within privately-owned office complexes. Each of these units may have both uniformed and non-uniformed sworn personnel mixed with non-sworn personnel assigned there. Some of these facilities are open to the public, some are not.
Regardless of facility type, Department personnel are reminded to remain aware while on duty regarding any unauthorized attempt to gain access to a county workspace. Be vigilant by doing the following:
Secure Facilities
Unsecure Facilities
Noteworthy Incident:
At the Biscaluz Center Armory, an unattended pistol was recovered outside the main armory door by an armory sergeant at 0600 hours, Monday morning. A check of Automated Firearm System (AFS) revealed no record on file. After review of the CCTV system it was discovered that at approximately 0200 hours, an unidentified Male White Adult (MW/A) walked up to the armory door with the pistol held inside a holster. He unholstered the pistol and pulled on the office door of the armory; however, the door was locked. The MW/A proceeded to unload the magazine from the weapon and left the ammunition on a table. He walked away, out of sight of the CCTV camera. The MW/A returned a short time later and proceeded to load the ammunition back into the magazine. He walked over to a nearby loading/unloading barrel and fired all the ammunition directly into it. He then collected all of the fired casings, threw them into the trash can, and walked away.
Biscaluz Center is an unsecure County facility and was closed at the time of this incident. It is not open to the public. However, it is a training facility and staging area for many important units on this Department including: SEB, AOT (patrol school), Recruit Training (academy classes), Custody Assistant Academy, TAS, and professional staff.
Vigilance and awareness is imperative to maintain a safe environment for all Department Personnel.
