PERSONALLY OWNED VEHICLES

 

The purpose of this newsletter is to remind Department members the importance of ensuring their privately owned vehicle properly displays the vehicle license plates, tabs, stickers, and that it conforms to all existing California Vehicle Code (CVC) laws. 

 

Section 4000(a)(1) CVC states, a person shall not drive, move, or leave standing upon a highway, or in an off-street public parking facility, a motor vehicle unless it is registered and the appropriate fees have been paid.  In addition, Section 5200 CVC states, when two license plates are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle they were issued to, one in the front and one in the rear.

 

Department members are reminded if they are concerned about displaying their license plates on their personally owned vehicle because they are employed with the Sheriff’s Department and/or concerned about their safety, they should request their home address remain confidential through DMV’s confidentiality program (1808.4 CVC). Some of the personnel that qualify for the aforementioned program are as follows:

 

  • Active/retired peace officer and their spouse or child;
  • Police/Sheriff Department employee; and
  • Non-sworn dispatcher/employee with the City Police Department or County Sheriff’s Department.

 

Department members wishing to apply for DMV confidentiality should complete DMV form INV 32 and submit it to their unit’s operational staff for processing.  Additional information regarding DMV confidentiality can be obtained by contacting the Department’s Personnel Processing and Compliance/EPTS Support Unit at (213) 229-1758 or (213) 229-1731, and ask to speak with the DMV confidentiality coordinator.  

 

Lastly, if you operate a motor vehicle on the road, you are required to conform to all existing CVC laws, such as having a valid driver license and vehicle insurance.
