For statistical coding, this category includes assaults by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury (broken bones, internal injuries, or injuries requiring stitches).  This type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm which may include personal weapons (such as hands, fist, or feet).

A

If on-duty and serious injury requiring hospital treatment results, notify Homicide Bureau immediately and follow their direction.  If off-duty or no serious injury, notify Major Crimes Bureau immediately and follow their direction (see section 4-01/090.40).  All others assign to Station/Unit Detectives.

057 - ADW -       On Police Officer - Dangerous Weapon
                           other than Hands/Feet/Fist, Gun, or Knife.

058 - ADW -       On Police Officer - Hands/Feet/Fist.

On “Assault-Non-Aggravated (Felony or Misdemeanor),” use most appropriate code.
