For additional information and procedures regarding handling hate crimes, see section 5-09/510.00, Handling Hate Crimes and Hate Incidents.

Deputies handling a hate crime shall prepare an Incident Report (SH-R-49).  Hate crime reports shall not be deferred.

All gang-related hate crimes shall be reported and documented with the statistical code 860.

All hate crime investigations shall be handled by Station/Unit detectives.  Hate crimes shall initially be classified as active and assigned to station/unit detectives.  Station/unit detectives shall review reports for proper classification and determine if the incident should, or should not, be listed as a hate crime.  For all hate crimes assigned to the Hate Crime Task Force, the investigator shall complete a case clearance supplemental report using clearance code “112 - Reassigned to Other Agency.”

All hate crime reports shall have a Special Request Distribution (SRD) to the Hate Crime Task Force and the station's/unit’s Hate Crimes Coordinator notated on the report.

All in-custody arrests for hate crimes and noteworthy hate crimes or hate incidents shall be immediately reported via telephone to the on-call Hate Crimes Task Force investigator.  If after hours, SIB may be contacted to make such notification.  All approved hate crime reports shall be immediately emailed to the “Hate Crime Task Force” distribution group in Outlook.

The watch commander shall generate a chief’s memorandum to be forwarded to the concerned division chief.  An operational log entry shall be made by contacting Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies handling a hate incident shall prepare an Incident Report (SH-R-49).  Hate incident reports may be deferred with the approval of the watch sergeant. 

All gang-related hate incidents shall be reported and documented with the statistical code 860.

All hate incident reports shall have a Special Request Distribution (SRD) to the Hate Crime Task Force and the station's/unit’s Hate Crimes Coordinator notated on the report.

All hate incident reports shall be emailed to the “Hate Crimes Task Force” distribution group in Outlook.
